LETTERS... to the Editor

I would like to start by thanking Doc Cavallini for continuing to report on the actions of our local government. His most recent article touched on the City's water plant being in need of repair. If you are like me, you have probably noticed that the water coming out of your tap has recently changed color and flavor. Apparently this is being caused by two of the five filters no longer working properly. Rather than spending $20,000 to fix both of the filters, the council agreed to spend $10,000 to fix one. The hope is that this will provide adequate water for residents until the mayor is able to implement "HIS PLAN" for a new water plant. In the mean time, the City is giving away hundreds of thousands of dollars to private individuals in an effort to attract new businesses that do not hire locally, develop sub-divisions and apartment complexes that will add students to the school system without contributing any new property tax towards the districts deficit, and expand a local business who's primary sources of revenue are video gambling and liquor peddling. I have a problem with the fact that our elected officials think it's more important for our community to have a cocktail than clean drinking water. And regardless of whether or not the mayor cares about the health and education of our children, the fact of the matter is that we pay a lot of money for our water and we shouldn't be forced to spend additional money on bottled water when the issue could be fixed for a one time fee of less than $25 per household. In conclusion, I would like to challenge John Mohr to address this issue before gambling away another penny of our tax dollars on a dream that this small town will someday become a big city.
